Arrays

An array is a collection of elements stored in a contiguous block of memory.
Each element in an array must be the same data type, and they are distinguished
by an index. The first element in the array is at index 0.
Creating an array involves two steps, as follows:
1. Declaring a reference for the array.
2. Instantiating the array using the new keyword and specifying the size
of the array.

In Java, data is either a primitive data type or an object. Because arrays are not one of the eight primitive data types, they must be objects. Therefore, an array requires a reference to access it and the new keyword to instantiate it.

Use square brackets to declare an array reference. For example, the following
statement declares a reference to an array of ints:

int [] sums;

In Java, you can also declare an array with the square brackets following the variable name, instead of preceding it. For example, sums can be declared as follows:

int sums [];

This is for compatibility with C and C++. My preference is to place the square brackets before the variable name, because it makes the reference declaration clearer.

The sums reference can refer to any array of ints, no matter how many elements are in the array. Because sums is a reference, it can also be assigned to null.

The size of the array is determined when the array is instantiated. An int is placed in square brackets to specify the size. For example, the following statement assigns sums to a new array of 20 ints:

sums = new int[20];

Because an array must be in contiguous memory, its size cannot be changed after the memory is initially allocated. If the array of size 20 is deemed too small, a new larger array is instantiated and the old array is garbage collected. For example, the following statement assigns sums to a larger array of 30 ints:

sums = new int[30];

The array of 20 ints is garbage collected, assuming that it is no longer being referenced in your program. Assigning sums to an array of 20 ints and then to an array of 30 ints demonstrates how sums can refer to any size array of ints.

An array reference can be declared and the array object can be instantiated in the same statement. The following statement declares temps a reference to an array of doubles, and temps is assigned to a new array of 31 doubles in the same statement:

double [] temps = new double[31];

As with sums, temps can refer to any size array of doubles. Right now, it refers to an array of 31 doubles.

Because an array object is instantiated using the new keyword, the  memory is zeroed after it is allocated. Therefore, the initial values of the elements in the array will be their zero value (these values were found in Table 4.5). For example, the 31 doubles in the temps array are initially 0.0, and the 30 ints in the sums array are initially 0.

407 – Proxy Authentication Required

Error Message: “407 – Proxy Authentication Required”

Translation: A proxy server is a server that sits between a Web browser and an actual Web server. The proxy server reads all requests to the actual server and attempts to service each request itself—if not, the request is forwarded to the actual server. Proxy servers improve performance by caching popular pages for certain groups of users and are often used to enhance the security of a Web site.
When you get a 407 error, the URL resource is available, but a connection requires the use of a proxy server that also needs authentication cre dentials. This error indicates that access has been denied because you have not logged onto the proxy server first or have logged on incorrectly.

Solution: You’ll need to log into the appropriate proxy server first and provide the proper credentials (password and/or username) before you’re able to proceed to the desired URL. This generally means you’ll need a URL for the proxy server, along with authentication credentials. Once you’re successfully logged onto the proxy server, you can usually navigate to the desired Web site successfully. If you have trouble obtaining proxy server information, contact the Webmaster for detailed user instructions.

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup

Error Message: “Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup.”

Translation: This error message appears along with a list of potential solutions that usually work, unless you are trying to print a
very large (in terms of file size) PowerPoint file. When that is the case, there usually is nothing wrong with the printer, despite what the error message says.

Solution: Sometimes pictures and graphics embedded within a PowerPoint file are too large and must be reduced in size before the printer can handle the file. Microsoft recommends opening the file in PowerPoint 2003 and compressing pictures to reduce their file sizes. Find the Picture toolbar and click Compress Pictures. If the toolbar isn’t visible, expand the View menu, expand Toolbars, and click the Picture entry.

When the Compress Pictures dialog box appears, make sure the All Pictures In Document radio button is selected, select the Print radio button in the Change Resolution section, and select the checkboxes next to Compress Pictures and Delete Cropped Areas Of Pictures. Click OK, click Apply, let the utility do its work, and try printing the file again.

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

Error Message: “This program has performedan illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.”

Translation: Clicking Details on this error message will show a possible explanation, such as “X caused an invalid page fault in module Y at Z,” where X is the name of the program; Y is the name of the module and Z is the address within the memory. After you click OK, the program shuts down.

Solution: Identify when the error message first occurred. Also, determine if you recently made changes to the computer; for example, you installed software or changed the hardware configuration. Clean booting your computer can help you identify the cause of the message. To Clean Boot, followthese steps:

• Restart your computer. When the Starting Windows dialog box is displayed, press the F8 key and choose Step-By-Step Confirmation from the Startup menu.
• When you are prompted, load the following items (if you are prompted to load any other items, type n) :
- Dblspace driver
- Himem.sys
- Ifshlp.sys
- Dblbuff.sys

• Load the Windows GUI (graphical user interface), and choose to load all Windows drivers.

Error Deleting File. Cannot delete XX. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in us

Error Message: “Error Deleting File. Cannot delete XX. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.”

Translation: When you attempt to delete a file (XX) that another program is using (for example, if you have an Excel document open and you try to delete that file using Windows Explorer) this error will occur. Attempting to delete a temporary file in Windows Explorer while Windows is using it will also cause this error.

Solution: Close the file that is causing the error. If Windows is using a system file, rebooting
your system will release the file and allow you to delete it.

Cannot delete: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename

Error Message: “Cannot delete: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename.”

Translation: Variations of this message can occur when you click a file in Windows Explorer to open, delete, or drag it to the Recycle Bin. The file or folder may contain invalid characters, even though they may not appear in the filename.

Solution: Create a temporary folder, copy the file or folder’s contents to it and delete the old folder’s contents by pressing CTRL-A and pressing DELETE. Restore all the files except the improperly named one to the old folder. Use a single-character wildcard question mark to replace the invalid character (i.e. to rename a file named *eadme.txt, type ren?eadme.txt readme.txt).

AMD Launches Phenom II CPU, Its Fastest Yet

TWO DAYS SHY of a year since Intel launched Penryn, its fi rst 45nm processor, AMD fi nally countered witha few 45nm CPUs of its own, releasing the Phenom II in January. But based on our
hands-on testing of two Phenom II–based desktops—the Dell XPS 625 and the Maingear
Dash—the chip isn’t quite as dominating as AMD would have you believe.

Phenom II Explained
AMD is positioning its Phenom II products between Intel’s Core 2 Quad and Core i7 off erings. Phenom II chips are available in two versions: the X4 920 and the X4 940 Black Edition, which compete tit-for-tat against Intel’s highest Core 2 Quad CPU frequencies at 2.8 and 3.0 GHz, respectively. AMD bumped the amount of shared L3 cache of the Phenom II processors from 2MB up to 6MB, giving each CPU a to tal cache of 8MB. Th e move puts Phenom II processors right in the middle of Intel’s Core 2 Quad lineup for cache size, but the result is still short of the 12MB caches provided on higher-end Core i7 chips. Th ough limited overclocking of the 920 edition processors is available through AMD’s OverDrive soft ware, the company is tipping its hat toward the extremeperformance crowd with its Black Edition processors. These CPUs run multiplierunlocked, which liquidnitrogen- armed enthusiasts have been able to push to frequencies above 6 GHz, surpassing the record for Intel Core i7 processors, which stands at 5.5 GHz.

Peppy Performance
Th e Phenom II’s integrated memory controller and HyperTransport interface give it a technical edge over Core 2 Quad chips, which lack those features. Intel moved to an integrated memory controller and be - gan incorporating its version of HyperTransport, dubbed QuickPath Interconnect, only with Core i7.
In comprehensive PC World lab testing of Dell’s XPS 625 (fi nd.pcworld.com/ 62316) and Maingear’s Dash (fi nd.pcworld.com/62326), the brand-new chips failed to blow Intel’s Core 2 Quad and Core i7 out of the water. Th e XPS 625 earned a World- Bench 6 score of 108, and the
Dash posted a score of 117. Th e Dash’s score tied for the fastest mark among value PCs we’ve tested, but it’s far below the scores received by systems competing for our power desktop PCs chart.

Upgraders’ andOverclockers’ Dream?
However, AMD is waging its war against the speedier Core i7 chips on price, not performance especially for potential upgraders. Moving from a Core 2 Quad CPU to a Core i7 chip requires buying a new motherboard and memory, in addition to the processor. Moving from a Socket AM2+ CPU to a Phenom II requires buying only the new processor. And ifn you wait to upgrade to an AM3-socket Phenom II, ex - pected to be out early this year, you can still keep your DDR2 memory, and possibly even your motherboard. But from what we’ve seen so far, the price benefi t isn’t substantial if you’re in the market for a new computer: Th e two Phenom II systems we tested each rang up at $1499; three of our higherperforming power PCs (in - cluding both Core i7 and Core 2 Quad models) cost from $1600 to $1800.
AMD’s next-generation platform is launching alongside the Phenom II. Th e new Dragon platform (successor to the Phenom quad-corebased Spider) consists of 790-series motherboard chip sets and 4800-series Radeon HD graphics cards. Th e platform focuses on energy savings, thanks to a combination of AMD’s Cool’n’Quiet 3.0 soft ware and the 45nm architecture. Together, they allow Phenom II processors to reduce their heavy-load power consumption by a
reported 30 to 40 percent versus Phenom processors, with a savings of up to 50 percent at idle.
Judging from our testing, a Phenom II will require a solid system backed by strong overclocking to surpass the prowess of even a midrange or high-end Core 2 Quad processor. If you’re looking to upgrade your rig and you care more about simplicity than you do about high stock clock speeds, AMD’s single-CPU upgrade is a powerful statement. As for performance, perhaps AMD’s new products will seem more appealing as soon as extreme-system manufacturers start pushing their Phenom II chip sets past the 4-GHz barrier.

Error Message: “Fatal Error: An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.

Error Message: “Fatal Error: An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Press OK to view the setup log file.”

This error message means the Setup program is unable to read from your WinXP installation CD.

If your WinXP installation CD is very damaged or scratched, you’ll have to get a replacement from Microsoft. If you’re in the United States, call (800) 360-7561 Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific to order a new CD. If you’re in Canada, call (800) 933-4750 during the same days and hours to get a replacement.
You may be able to resolve this by copying the setup files from the CD to a folder in your hard drive. If you’re installing WinXP to a clean hard drive, insert a Win98 or WinMe startup disk in your computer’s floppy drive and reboot the computer. At the command prompt, type the following command:
xcopy [CD Drive Letter]\i386\*.* c:\i386\*.* /s /e

This command copies all the files in the i386 folder of your WinXP installation CD to a new i386 folder in your C: drive. The /s and /e command switches ensure that you copy all directories and subdirectories (even empty ones) to the new location.

Now, type c:\i386\winnt.exe to continue the setup process. Winnt.exe is the installation file that must be used when you’re running.

the Setup program from a startup disk command prompt. If you’re simply upgrading an existing Win98/Me installation, click Start and Run, type cmd in the Open textbox, and click OK. At the command prompt, type the same command as above to copy the files. When the copy process is complete, type c:\i386 \winnt32.exe to launch the setup process. The reason you use the winnt32.exe file in this situation is that you are running the Setup program from within Windows.

Error Message: “STOP: 0x0000000A irql_not_less_or_equal.”

This error message is triggered when you are upgrading your system from Windows 98/Me to WinXP.

Hmmm . . . This one is not very descriptive at all. IRQs (interrupt request lines) are the communication channels via which your hardware devices communicate with your computer’s CPU. When a device needs the CPU’s attention, it uses an interrupt request to let the CPU know that it has data that requires handling. So it’s reasonable to suspect this error message indicates a problem with a hardware device or a device driver.

According to Microsoft, the root cause of this problem is an incompatible hardware device or device driver. To resolve the problem, restart your computer; if the Setup program gives you the option to revert to your previous OS, take it. When your old OS (whether it’s Win98 or WinMe) restarts, uninstall any antivirus and boot manager software and “clean boot” your computer. A clean boot is a simplified boot sequence that prevents device drivers, startup programs, and other settings from loading at boot time.
To clean boot in WinMe, click Start and Run and type msconfig in the Open textbox. Click the General tab and then click the Selective Startup checkbox. Under Selective Startup, click the checkbox to the left of each item to deselect the item. Then, click the Startup tab, find the *StateMgr entry in the list, and click its checkbox to select it. Click OK to accept your changes and click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
To clean boot in Win98, the steps are fairly similar. To launch the System Configuration Utility in Win98, click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Information. Click Tools and then click System Configuration Utility to launch the application. Click the General tab and deselect every item under Selective Startup by clicking each checkbox. Click OK to accept your changes and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your system.
After the computer clean boots, attempt the WinXP installation again. If the error still occurs, see the steps below.
If the WinXP Setup program did not give you the option to revert to your previous OS, Microsoft advises that you remove every unnecessary piece of hardware from your system. This includes any hardware device that you absolutely don’t need to run the computer, from USB (Universal Serial Bus) devices to network and sound cards. If the WinXP setup is still unsuccessful, try flashing your BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) to a new version. Consult with your computer’s manufacturer to figure out how to do this.

Mount the ISO File on a Virtual Machine

If you’re testing Ubuntu Server Edition, you can connect the ISO file directly to a virtual
machine. For this book, I installed Hardy Heron in a number of different configurations
on VMware Server Edition. While VMware Server is freely available from www.vmware
.com/download/server/, the source code is not included and therefore is not associated
with an open source license.
For more information on downloading and installing VMware server, see Chapter 20.
For the purpose of this chapter, I assume you have some virtualization system
installed. For those virtualization systems described in Chapter 20, there is some way
to mount the ISO image directly, as if it were a physical CD/DVD. Once configured,
the virtual machine automatically boots the noted ISO file as if it were a CD inserted
in the appropriate drive. For the purpose of this chapter, Figure 2-2 specifies one
example of how an ISO image is configured as a CD on VMware 1.0.x server.

Downloading the ISO File Cooperatively

Many Ubuntu mirror sites support the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, using
BitTorrent- and Jigdo-based P2P tools. If you see files like these,

ubuntu-8.04-server-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-8.04-server-i386.iso.jigdo

you can use the contents of these files to download Ubuntu ISO files using the aforementioned
P2P tools. For more information, see www.bittorrent.com and www.debian
.org/CD/jigdo-cd/.

Download the ISO File from the Command Line

The advantage of downloading a large ISO file with certain commands is that such
commands can handle interruptions in the download process. Specifically, the wget
and curl commands can restart a download from the point of an interruption. If these
commands don’t already exist on a local Ubuntu system, they can be installed from
packages of the same name using the following command:

$ sudo apt-get install wget curl

These commands can then be used to download any file, based on a known URL. For
example, if to download the first Ubuntu Server Edition LTS release (6.06), Dapper Drake,
from the Kernel.org server, navigate to http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/6.06/.
Alternatively, in the Firefox web browser, right-click the desired link, and then click
Copy Link Location from the pop-up menu that appears. Then activate a GUI-based
command line interface and start the command with wget -c and a single quote:

$ wget -c '

Then press CTRL-INSERT to add the copied link to the command, and end the command
with a second single quote, which leads to a result similar to that shown in Figure 2-1.

If an interruption occurs, repeat the command; the download continues from the
point of the interruption. If you want to test this feature, press CTRL-C and run the same
command again. If you’re familiar with the history feature of the command line, all you
need to do to repeat the same command is press the UP ARROW key once to replay the
previous command. If you would rather use the curl command, start the download with
the following command:

$ curl -C - -O '

Then repeat the same process described for the wget command. Don’t forget to end
the command with a second single quote.

Installing Ubuntu Server

Many Linux administrators download the installation program for the latest version of
several Linux distributions, including Ubuntu Server Edition. These downloads correspond
to the contents of the appropriate CD or DVD. In this context, an ISO file is a standard

To download Ubuntu Server Edition from the Ubuntu website or an authorized
mirror site take the following steps:

1. Navigate to the Get Ubuntu website at www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download.
2. As of this writing, the options show Ubuntu 8.04 LTS – Supported to 2013 and
Ubuntu 8.10 – Supported to 2011. These options correspond to the Hardy
Heron and Intrepid Ibex releases, respectively.
3. Under What Type Of Computer Do You Have?, select an architecture. The options
also specify the associated CPUs.
4. Under the “Choose a location near you” option, click the Please Choose A
Location drop-down box. Scroll to a server mirror location geographically
close to you. There are locations available on six continents.
5. Click the Start Download link. The Ubuntu website should take you to another
page, with a message suggesting that the download will begin shortly. The URL
for that page is a long one that starts with www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/
downloading.
6. When the download is ready, accept the option to save the noted ISO file to disk.

step 5 should include a download URL for the ISO file and server. For example, it lists the
following site for Ubuntu downloads at the main Linux kernel servers: http://mirrors
.us.kernel.org/ubuntu-releases/.
The second Ubuntu download site noted also include links for help and suggestions
to help if you encounter trouble during or before the download. Two of the suggestions
are relevant to this section:

▼ Try choosing a different download location. Depending on traffic and the
connection from the target mirror, the geographically closest location might
not be the fastest option.
▲ Try waiting for just a little while. Many download servers have limits on the
number of connections.
Incidentally, these tips also apply when selecting a mirror for package updates, as
discussed in Chapter 8.
Be aware that downloads of large files sometimes don’t work. A power surge, a mistake
on a router, or even a running microwave oven too close to a wireless network can
interrupt and even corrupt a downloaded large file. Every downloaded ISO file can be
verified with an MD5 message digest. For example, to find the MD5 message digest of the
Hardy Heron Ubuntu Server Edition, 32-bit CPU ISO file, run the following command:

$ md5sum ubuntu-8.04.1-server-i386.iso

The output can be verified against the MD5 hash listed at https://help.ubuntu.com/
community/UbuntuHashes. The MD5 hash is often also available in the same server
directories as the ISO files.

15 Effective Tips to Increase Google Adsense CTR

How to make more money with Google Adsense? Get more clicks on ads. We all want to increase Google Adsense CTR i.e. click through ratio, because the higher times the surfer clicks the Adsense ad, higher is the payout to you. So here are 15 effective ways to improve your Adsense CTR.
How to increase Google Adsense CTR?

1. Post Adsense ads them on text rich pages and make sure that Adsense had a bunch of keywords to work with. Getting Higher paying keywords is better of course.
2. Get rid of public service ads, which pay you nothing for your efforts. Here are some ways to avoid getting PSA’s.
3. Avoid titles like the approved ‘Sponsored Links’ and ‘Advertisements’ above the Adsense ads. Why do you want to tell the world they are ads when google already puts ‘Ads by Gooooogle’ with them. These two terms are the only ones allowed by Google TOS. Any other terms will get your account terminated. Remember to avoid these 15 Adsense mistakes.
4. Use section targeting - you can target an ad unit to a specific section of your blog, as well as block out irrelevant sections like navigational links. Useful to get more targeted ads.

Best Google Adsense Link Colors to get higher CTR?

1. Match the colors of your ads with the colour scheme of your site. Blending with your sites color profile helps to identify them not as ads, but as links similar to those of your site. The more the AdSense looks like part of your site, the higher CTR you will get. You can also match the Adsense fonts with your website font design for great results.

2. Blend ads with your page - remove the borders by having a similar color as your background helps to show ads as being part of your site. Do not blend text or the ‘Ads by Gooooogle’ with your background color as it is against Google TOS (Google does not like hidden text!). However, such blending may not work for you always due to banner blindness. Neither do they see the ads, not do they click on them. So sometimes a bold contrasting ad may work better depending on your website design.

3. Experiment by changing the colors, background of advertisements. You have to find out what works best for your site, not others. You can also rotate Adsense colors to reduce ad blindness.

Speed up Windows XP

1. Eliminate programs that run at start-up
Stopping programs from running at start-up is especially daunting because there is no single place you can go to halt them all. Some run because they're in the Startup folder, others because they're part of logon scripts, others because of Registry settings, and so on. But with a little bit of perseverance, you should be able to keep them from running.
Start by cleaning out your Startup folder. Find it in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, where username is your Windows logon name. Delete the shortcuts of any programs you don't want to run on start-up. As with any shortcuts, when you delete them, you're deleting only the shortcut, not the program itself. (You can also clear out the start-up items by going to Start > Programs > Startup, then right-clicking items you want to remove.)

How useful was this tip for you?
Very

View results
Next, clean out your Scheduled Tasks folder. Go to C:\Windows\Tasks, and delete the shortcuts of any programs that you don't want to run automatically on a schedule.

Note: You can bypass all the programs in your Startup folder on an as-needed basis. To stop XP from loading any programs in the Startup folder, hold down the Shift key during bootup. No programs in the Startup folder will run, but the items will still remain there so that they will start up as they would normally the next time you boot.

2. Speed up shutdown times
speed up; you can also make sure that your system shuts down faster. If shutting down XP takes what seems to be an inordinate amount of time, here are a couple of steps you can take to speed up the shutdown process:
Don't have XP clear your paging file at shutdown. For security reasons, you can have XP clear your paging file (pagefile.sys) of its contents whenever you shut down. Your paging file is used to store temporary files and data, but when your system shuts down, information stays in the file. Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown because sensitive information such as unencrypted passwords sometimes ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn't a high priority, you might not want to clear it. To shut down XP without clearing your paging file, run the Registry Editor (click Start > Run, then type regedit in the Run box) and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Change the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Close the Registry, and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP from now on, the paging file won't be cleared, and you should be able to shut down more quickly.

3. Disable services that run at start-up
Constantly running in the background of XP are services--processes that help the operating system run or that provide support to applications. Many of these services launch automatically at start-up. While you need many of them, some are not required, and they can slow down your system when they run in the background.

You can disable services at start-up by using the system configuration utility, similar to the way that you halt programs from running at start-up, except that you use the Services tab instead of the Startup tab. But the system configuration utility doesn't necessarily list every service that launches on start-up. A bigger problem is that disabling services is more of shot in the dark than disabling programs. When you disable a program, you can get a sense of what the program does. But when you disable a service through the system configuration utility, there's often no way to know what it does.
A better way of disabling services at start-up is via the Services computer-management console. Run it by typing services.msc at the command prompt. The Services computer-management console includes a description of all services so that you can know ahead of time whether a particular service is one you want to turn off. It also lets you pause the service so that you can test your machine and see whether that service is needed.

After you run the console, click the Extended tab. This view will show you a description of each service in the left pane when you highlight the service. The Startup Type column shows you which services launch on start-up--any with Automatic in that field. Click that column to sort together all the services that automatically launch on start-up. Then highlight each of those services and read the descriptions.

When you find a service you want to disable, right-click it and choose Properties. In the Properties dialog box that appears, choose Manual from the Startup Type drop-down list. The service won't start automatically from now on, but you can start it manually via the console. If you want the service disabled so that it can't be run, choose Disabled. To test the results, turn off any services that you don't want to run by clicking Stop The Service in the left pane, or by right-clicking the service and choosing Stop

10 Ways Microsoft's Retail Stores Will Differ From Apple Stores

Brennon Slattery, PC World

Microsoft announced plans to open retail stores, hoping to boost visibility of many of its products and its brand. The move seems to be an effort to mimic the success that Apple has had with its retail stores. The news is just too tempting not to have some fun with. So here are some yet-to-be-officially-revealed details about the Microsoft stores.

1) Instead of Apple's sheer walls of glass, Microsoft's stores will have brushed steel walls dotted with holes -- reminiscent of Windows security.

2) The store will have six different entrances: Starter, Basic, Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. While all six doors will lead into the same store, the Ultimate door requires a fee of $100 for no apparent reason.

3) Instead of a "Genius Bar" (as Apple provides) Microsoft will offer an Excuse Bar. It will be staffed by Microsofties trained in the art of evading questions, directing you to complicated and obscure fixes, and explaining it's a problem with the hardware -- not a software bug.

4) The Windows Genuine Advantage team will run storefront security, assuming everybody is a thief until they can prove otherwise.

5) Store hours are undetermined. At any given time the store mysteriously shuts down instantaneously for no apparent reason. (No word yet on what happens to customers inside).

6) Stores will be named Microsoft Live Retail Store with PC Services for Digital Lifestyle Enthusiasts.

7) Fashioned after Microsoft's User Account Control (UAC) in Vista, sales personnel will ask you whether you're positive you want to purchase something at least twice.

8) Xbox 360 section of the store will be organized in a ring -- which will inexplicably go red occasionally.

9) DreamWorks will design a scary in-store theme park ride called "blue screen of death."

10) Store emergency exits will be unlocked at all times so people can get in anytime they want even if the front doors are locked.

I see nothing — just a blinking prompt!

When the computer first starts, text should be displayed on the screen. Typically, you see a copyright notice. The computer make and model number may be displayed. (You may see a graphic image, but it’s really a special text mode where the “characters” are bits of a larger image that are puzzle-pieced together on the screen.)
Traditionally, a memory count takes place when the computer first starts. You may see the counter tick away on some computers. Depending on which hardware options are installed, you may see text regarding those options: hard drive, mouse, or video adapter, for example. Eventually, the parade of text ends with a prompt to press a certain key — usually, Delete or F1 — to enter the computer’s Setup program. You have about two beats of a lamb’s tail to decide about that, and then automatically the computer’s operating system is loaded, takes off, and displays that colorful, graphic Windows logo. That’s the way it’s supposed to happen.

When all you see is a blinking prompt, it means one of the following things:
Problem: A motherboard failure has occurred. Something is wrong with the motherboard — an electronics fault, no power, or some other type of corruption.
Solution: Take the computer into the dealer and have someone replace the motherboard. That can be expensive.

Problem:
The computer is too hot. You can tell by feeling the case or checking to see whether the fans are spinning. A computer doesn’t operate if its internal temperature is too hot.
Solution: Fix the fans. Some microprocessors have fans, and these can be replaced. Ensure that your dealer replaces only the microprocessor fan and not the entire microprocessor, which would be expensive. (However, if the dealer replaces the fan and the microprocessor is damaged, the microprocessor needs to be replaced as well.)

Problem: The hard drive has no operating system. This problem happens on those systems that show logos and not startup text. Occasionally, you may even see a “Missing Operating System” error.
Solution: See the section “The dreaded Missing Operating System message,” a couple of sections from here.

1. Some computers, such as eMachines, start with a graphic logo. You can change this in the computer’s setup program so that you can see the startup text instead. That’s a good option to choose if you’re experiencing startup trouble.
2. Make a note of which key combination starts the computer’s Setup program. Text on the screen informs you of which key or key combination to press to enter this program. On most PCs, it’s the Del or Delete key, F1, F2, Alt+S, or F10. Whatever the key, make a note of it, for example, in the manual that came with the computer or on this book’s Cheat Sheet.
3. Sometimes, cables come loose, which may lead you to believe that you have a major component failure, but it’s just not the case. If you’re bold enough, unplug the PC and venture into its case. Check to ensure that all the cables are properly connected and that all expansion cards are properly “seated” into their slots.

Error Message: “BIOS ROM checksum error—System Halted, Insert Disk”

Error Message: “BIOS ROM checksum error—System Halted, Insert Disk”

Translation: We might as well tackle the tough one first here, folks. This one in particular has caused many a late night and numerous cases of heartburn to be sure. This occurs when you have corrupted your computing system’s BIOS image somehow, like with a failed flash attempt, for example. Shorting the jumper on your motherboard for clearing CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) may or may not get you back up and running. However, depending on your particular BIOS version and its capability, you should be able to restore a clean BIOS image through the following flash method.

Solution: Assuming you have access to another machine to work with, create a bootable floppy disk, either DOS-based or Windows-based. Copy the BIOS flash loader utility for your BIOS type (usually either Award or AMI) onto the disk, as well as the latest version of your motherboard’s BIOS. Most likely you can find both the latest BIOS file and the flash utility on your motherboard manufacturer’s Web site. If your machine is actually prompting you to “insert disk and strike any key,” then you’re almost done. The flash utility will automatically load and flash the BIOS or prompt you to enter the BIOS file name to flash. Make sure you jot down the
exact name of the BIOS file in case you need it for this process.
For AMI BIOS types and other versions of Award’s flash utility, you can follow the same syntax convention but obviously you need to replace the AWDFLASH command with the proper flash utility command that is specific to your motherboard BIOS. Upon power up, with this floppy disk in your drive, the AUTOEXEC.BAT file should load the flash utility and BIOS file for reprogramming your BIOS chip. If your machine does not boot to your floppy drive, disconnect all other hard drives and optical drives in the system and then power down and power up the system again. Follow the on-screen instructions, and once the process is complete, you should be able to boot your machine normally.

A checksum value is generated by the CMOS and is saved for error checking on subsequent boot-ups. This error message will appear if the checksum is different from one boot-up to the next. The BIOS has auto loaded a basic default configuration so that your motherboard boots properly. The good news is, typically entering your BIOS menu, checking your settings, adjusting them if need be, and resaving before exit will clear up the error. This error may also have been caused by a weak battery. Check the CMOS battery (it looks like a small disk-style watch battery on your motherboard) and replace it, if necessary. You may also have to clear CMOS
by shorting jumper pins on your motherboard, as well, to remedy the problem.

“Mozilla cannot use the profile ‘default’ because it is in use. Please choose another profile or create a new one.”

Error Message: “Mozilla cannot use the profile ‘default’ because it is in use. Please choose another profile or create a new one.”

Translation: This message may appear when you begin to launch Mozilla, eventhough it is apparently contradictory, as it implies your profile is in use but you haven’t yet opened the software program. That’s because you probably have Netscape already running. Mozilla shares many files with later versions of Netscape, including profiles, and it recognizes the open profile.

Solution: The easy solution is to close Netscape and log onto Mozilla. But doing so may lead to lost bookmarks, email, or other settings in either program. We recognize that Mozilla users as a group tend to be sophisticated Internet users, and you may use multiple browsers. This should be fine as long as you use separate profiles, so follow the on-screen instructions for creating a new profile and use it each time you use Mozilla.

Error Message: “An unexpected error occurred.”

This error may indicate a missing file, or it may be a symptom of a nonfunctioning network.

Translation: This message may appear when opening the properties of a network connection in the Network Connections folder. It’s possible that Registry settings for the network connection may be damaged.

Solution: Click Start, Run, and type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\netshell.dll. Click OK and try again to open the properties for the affected network connection. If it still doesn’t work, click Start, Run, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\ole32.dll, click OK, and then restart the computer and try to open the properties for the network connection.

How do movies or TV affect people?

"Reel life is based on real life," they say. But how far it is true is left to the judgment of the individual's intelligence. The impact that movies and television have on our lives can never be over-emphasized.
Nowadays television and movies are the only sources to keep in pace with the latest trend in the global environment. Every part of our lifestyle is somehow influenced by what we see in the television or in movies. The advent of the motion picture has been one of the greatest influences of the cultural activities of the humankind. It does not require great intelligence to ascertain this fact. If we just give a glance to see hanging or posted on the walls are the photos of our favorite celebrities from the tinsel world, mounted on the table are things from our favorite T. V. show, the music blaring out of the system of the latest excuses for musical excellence, in your wardrobe are outfits last seen on our favorite stars, the hair cream, shampoo, paste, and what not, the list is endless. This does not stop with just what we wear and own it also extends to the way we behave in our peer group.

Quantum Physics (Essential Science Series)

Deskription Book : 172 pages and 10 Mb. and Pdf file.
How can a particle be in two places at once? What do wave-particle duality and quantum uncertainty mean? Why did Richard Feynman, who won the Nobel Prize for his work on quantum theory, say that "nobody understands quantum mechanics"? Drawing on a long-standing fascination with quantum physics, and decades spent investigating its history, John Gribbin tells its story - from Max Planck's realization at the dawn of the 20th century that light behaves like a stream of particles, to the 21st-century possibility of parallel worlds and teleportation.
